Riegens makes a splash at Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh

Maintenance, refurbishment, Riegens
Bespoke lighting made by Riegens for the refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh blends with the original features of the building.

Riegens has supplied bespoke luminaires for the lighting upgrade of the recently refurbished Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh that sympathetically blend with the original feature of this Category A-listed building. Riegens also supplied a variety of fittings from its standard product range. The venue, managed by Edinburgh Leisure, houses a 50 m pool, state-of-the-art gym, three fitness studios, café and children’s play area. The refurbishment cost £37 million.

The layout of the building has been restored to enhance and promote the use of light, as was the vision and intention of the original architects back in 1967.

The existing Iroko ceilings (wooden slatted design) in the reception, foyer and pool halls have been retained and ice blasted to restore their appearance. Riegens designed recessed fittings using T8 and T5 lamps that looked like the original fittings in the Iroko ceilings. The new fittings use the latest technology in prism optics, T8 and T5 lamps, and DALI digital dimming control systems.

The luminaires were fitted with Tridonic’s EM Pro emergency-lighting control units based on the DALI protocol for emergency lighting, so they can be integrated into other DALI lighting-control systems or managed as a standalone system.
