Efficient air distribution helps maximise leisure-centre energy efficiency

Waterloo’s air-distribution systems are used throughout The Pods leisure centre to help maximise energy efficiency.

Energy-efficient air movement for the new BREEAM ‘Excellent’ leisure centre in Scunthorpe is provided by air-distribution products supplied by Waterloo Air Products. The Pods eco-friendly leisure centre cost £21 million and is constructed from glass and steel in an unusual design that features five intersecting geodesic domes covered in natural materials. Facilities include an 8-lane 25 m swimming pool, training pool, 85-station split-level fitness suite, 6-court sports hall, cafe and crèche.

Energy efficiency underpins the design and includes the use of intelligent lighting systems and natural ventilation. Extensive use of air-distribution devices minimises the environmental impact. Waterloo’s Aircell polymer grilles and aluminium louvred-face diffusers were specified throughout to deliver a well designed air-distribution system combining the needs for aesthetic requirements with energy-efficient air movement.

Other features include the use of run-of and grey water, with a lagoon to provide a top-up water supply for evaporative cooling and irrigating the grass roof. A biomass boiler using wood pellets provides for the centre’s heating needs.

Buro Happold was responsible for structural and M&E engineering. M&E contract was Derry Building Services. Main contractor was Bowmer & Kirkland. Andrew Wright Associates was behind the concept design, which was taken forward by S&P Architects.
