Dimplex supports Antarctic expedition
Dimplex heaters will provide vital heating and warmth for explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, now aged 68, and his team on the first-ever attempt to cross Antarctica during the winter. Temperatures can fall to -90°C. The 2000 mile journey across the ice from Novolazarevskaya to the Ross Sea will take place during the polar winter from March to September 2013, mostly in complete darkness.
The 6-man team will have to be entirely self-sufficient and travel by ice ski. Specially adapted track-type tractors pulling two cabooses will provide space for scientific work, accommodation and storage. The cabooses are fitted with the Dimplex heaters.
Dimplex space-saving products were chosen. They include fan heaters for instant bursts of warmth, backed by two storage heaters for background heat and a tubular heater for the storage heater.
Sir Ranulph says, ‘This will be my greatest challenge to date. We will stretch the limits of human endurance and use the unique opportunity to carry out scientific tasks in the extreme polar environment which will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the true effects of global warming on the Antarctic continent.’
The expedition set off by ship from London on 6 December.
