WindowMaster delivers natural ventilation for new school in Guernsey

WindowMaster, natural ventilation
Natural ventilation controlled by WindowMaster is a key aspect of the environmental control of this school in Guernsey.

Designed from the outset to be naturally ventilated, the new Les Beaucamps High School in Guernsey is served by natural-ventilation control systems supplied by WindowMaster. The company worked with architect Design Engine to ensure that the window and fenestration design achieve the requested by M&E consultant Hoare Lea.

The project involves the installation and control of 444 motors in 79 zones. The installation includes window actuators, various sensors, a weather station and a central computer control system.

Carl Sutterby, regional manager for WindowMaster, explains, ‘The location of the site is massively exposed and will benefit from our dynamic NV Advance system, which allows the facade to be intelligently controlled in response to wind speed and direction — inevitable in an exposed coastal installation.’

The weather station monitors external conditions around the building, including wind direction and speed, temperature and rainfall. Changes in wind pressure on the facade are also modelled. There are also internal sensors. Data is used by the computer control system to precisely control and position windows to keep internal temperatures constant and air quality in rooms fresh.

The system also monitors windows to prevent entrapment of, for example, fingers and hands.
