10 YEAR SPECIAL

10 year

This issue of Modern Building Services marks the completion of 10 years since we were launched — so we have invited various people from the industry to reflect on the past 10 years and look forward 10 years. Their reflections are interspersed with items demonstrating the progress that has been made in the industry.

The April 2014 issue of Modern Building Services marks 10 years on since we were first launched — way back in 2004. Anyone who has ever launched their own company, and there are many in this industry (you know who you are) will share with us the feeling of achievement that successfully launching a new company and steering it through its early years brings. Having launched a magazine, industry awareness of us is stimulated by the 22 000-plus copies we send out each month and our web site.

For us, progress towards that 10-year landmark has been indicated with every passing month by the front cover of every issue noting the volume (year of publication) and the issue number in that year. This month’s cover is ‘Volume 10 No. 12’ — our tenth year and the twelfth and final issue of that year.

We chose to commemorate that achievement with a special feature giving a wide range of people and organisations in the building-services sector the opportunity to reflect on the last 10 years and to look forward 10 years.

For us, as well as for the industry we are part of, the latter part of the last 10 years has been dominated by a long and difficult period of economic downturn. There have also been legislative and regulatory pressures, as well as environmental concerns, to contend with.

We have input from former CIBSE president Graham Manly observing how the various editions of Part L, now into its third revision, have led to architects increasingly talking to building-services engineers, He also remarks on the success of the industry in delivering many high-performance buildings and the facilities for the London Olympics.

Then we have David Frise of the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES) noting that today’s industry looks very different from the one that went into recession six years ago and see even greater transformations in the next 10 years. Formerly HVCA (Heating & Ventilating Contractors’ Association) the rebranding to B&ES reflects the evolution of the industry to respond to the growing need for integration if the industry is to deliver what clients require.

And there is much more in our 10-year special. 10 years back and 10 years forward is also a length of time that is not too long and not too short. It is just right.

On our achieving 10 years, we would like to thank our readers and contributors for their continued support.
