Sports club turns to renewable energy
A health, fitness and tennis club in Shrewsbury has invested around £350 000 in a renewable-energy centre to meets its heating and hot-water requirements using locally produced wood chips Designed and installed by Edge Renewables, the centre has two 199 kW biomass boilers that replace gas-fired boilers.
Other equipment includes two 5000 l insulated heat-storage vessels.
In addition, 960 m2 of solarPV panels have been installed on the club’s roof. They are expected to produce around 120 MWh of electricity a year, all of which will be used on site.
Steven Taylor, director of Mosaic Spar & Health Clubs, which owns the Shrewsbury club, expects to reduce carbon emissions by some 215 t a year.
The boilers will use 300 t a year of wood chips from the former Lea Quarry site at Wenlock Edge.
The energy centre was officially opened by the Mayor of Shrewsbury Councillor Beverley Baker.
