Interserve to construct factory of the future

Interserve is to build Factory 2050, a £43 million next-generation factory for the aerospace industry in Sheffield. Factory 2050 is the latest development at the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), which was co-founded by the university and US aerospace group Boeing in 2001.

The factory is a fully reconfigurable assembly and component research facility that is capable of quickly switching production of different components and parts. It due to be operational in autumn 2015.

Prof. Keith Ridgway, executive dean of the university’s AMRC with Boeing, said, ‘Our aim is for Factory 2050 to be the most advanced factory in the world.

‘Over the last 10 years, our initial vision to create a centre where engineering research is translated into real practical application for world-leading industries has been hugely successful.

‘Factory 2050 is a vital next step in ensuring we can maximise the opportunities and benefits to the Sheffield city region and secure our place as an international centre for excellence in advanced manufacturing.’
