Honeywell starts full-scale production of low-GWP HFO1234ze

Published:  03 February, 2015

Honeywell has started full scale commercial production of HFO refrigerant 1234ze. It has a GWP of less than 1 and is being produced at the Honeywell Fluorine Products facility in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. It is part of the Solistice line of materials with low global-warming potential.

Ken Gayer, vice president and general manager of the fluorine products business, said, ‘The Baton Rouge production facility is ready to serve customers around the world with this innovative material, which has a GWP of less than 1. We are seeing increasing demand for our entire Solstice line of low-GWP materials, and this new product has already been adopted by a range of customers globally.’

The company projects that using low-GWP Solstice materials to replace HFCs as aerosol propellants, insulating agents and refrigerants will eliminate over 350 Mt in CO2 equivalent by 2025.

HFO1234ze is non-flammable and is not classified as a volatile organic compound by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

It is considered as a preferred replacement for HFC134a, which is flammable and has a GWP of 1300.
