Ideal Commercial goes back to school — again and again

Following the installation of an Evomax boiler from Ideal Commercial Boilers in August 2014, Adams’ Grammar School in Shropshire has installed a further 12 of these wall-hung boilers — and more are in the offing. Established in 1656 and expanded over the years, this school comprises a variety of buildings. They include a Georgian mansion (pictured) and modern science laboratories — all of which required a flexible, low-cost heating solution.

Rob Mountford, director of HMM Mechanical in Stoke-on-Trent, specified the first Evomax boiler to replace an old floor-standing boiler serving the administration block. 13 boilers have now been installed in five plant rooms across the school — including some running on LPG for an accommodation building where mains gas was not an option.

A further five plant rooms are still to be upgraded to complete the school’s replacement programme.

Mr Mountford explained, ‘Due to the variety of ages, layouts and uses of the buildings, the versatility of the Evomax has been extremely beneficial in meeting the different specifications.

‘The basement plant room in the library block, for instance, has limited accessibility, so the compact size of the Evomax was an essential factor to allow ease of transportation and fitting.’

Evomax accessories were used to simplify and speed up installation. They included the insulated frame and header kits and the common flue header.

The next job is to replace two huge cast-iron boilers, buffer tanks and 2500 l of stored water.

Some of the biggest energy savings are being achieved for the outdoor swimming pool, where the boilers run 24/7. The previous boilers were oil-fired and inefficient.

Graham Hook, site manager at the school, comments, ‘We have noticed a significant reduction in running costs since the boilers were installed, and we are looking forward to calculating our total energy and cost savings after the final appliances are installed.

‘We are now employing Ideal Commercial to commission all new boilers scheduled for installation as this means that we can benefit form the 5-year warranty offered on the range.’
