Ideal Commercial Boilers triumphs at Edinburgh Castle

Ideal Commercial Boilers, space heating

Ideal Commercial Boilers supplied the boilers for the new heating and hot-water system for the army barracks next to Edinburgh. The two Imax floor-standing condensing boilers each have an output of 120 kW and serve the officers’ mess and the governor’s private residence.

The system was designed and installed by SPIE UK, whose representatives worked with Charlie Newell from Ideal to identify which boilers could overcome the challenging access, flue and system design restrictions.

The compact size of the boilers chosen enabled them to be transported into the basement plant room with no modifications to existing doorways — an important consideration in a listed building.

Future maintenance in the limited plantroom space is facilitated by access from the sides and top of the boilers.

Daniel Johnson, mechanical engineer at SPIE UK, explained, ‘There were various challenging aspects to this installation, not least because every decision had to comply with current standards and regulations relating to listed buildings.

‘The flue issue was complex as the liner needed to be dropped down the chimney, but with only limited access to the roof.

‘In addition, the boiler had to fit the footprint left by the previous appliance and be compatible with the existing flue penetration through the wall, as any modifications in this area were not permitted.’
