Toshiba VRF systems provide air-conditioning flexibility for Boots project

Boots
A range of air-conditioning solutions based on Toshiba VRF systems helped contribute to this new branch of Boots winning the award for ‘Best UK retail interior’.
Air conditioning for the ‘Best UK retail interior’ is provided by Toshiba SMMS 2-pipe and SHRM 3-pipe VRF systems. The award from Retail Week is for the first four floors of this 6-storey building comprising retail and office space on London’s Oxford Street. Each floor presented different air-conditioning challenges. One side of the building and the front have shaded, full-height glazed walls. The entrance and office areas are part glazed. Most of the indoor units are ducted. The basement has three zones — front, middle and back. The first floor has the 3-pipe system so that simultaneous heating and cooling requirements by opticians’ consulting rooms and the reception are can be met. Wall-mounted units were also required. The ‘glass box’ area on the second floor has conditioned air blown into the space from slot diffusers on the non-glazed side. Office areas use the Toshiba 3-pipe VRF technology. There are several floor-standing indoor units in meeting rooms due to restricted floor space. Part of Toshiba’s brief was to establish a controls solution, and the air-conditioning equipment was integrated into the Trend IQXcite range of controllers — the client’s preferred choice. All functions of the indoor units can be controlled and monitored from the Trend front end. Indoor units are connected by a LonWorks gateway through a Realtime LTX-21. to Trend controllers on each floor. The specifying consultant was Charterhouse, and Boots specified the use of the Toshiba equipment. Main mechanical contractor was Woodward & Co., and the air-conditioning installation was carried out by Artisan Air.
