Cooling systems for all data-centre requirements

Cooling systems for data centres with cooling capacities from 3 to 24 kW per rack are offered by Liebert in its X-treme range. At the lower end of cooling requirements, close-control air-conditioning units introduce cooled air into the space via cold aisles. Air is drawn through racks by fans in computer equipment and delivered into hot aisles. This approach can provide 3 to 5 kW of cooling per rack. Supplemental cooling to provide 5 to 16 kW of cooling per rack can be provided by the XD range. which enables additional cooling to be delivered where it is needed. It can be retrofitted to areas in a data centre housing racks with higher heat outputs. Refrigerant is pumped from a chiller to cooling modules in the space. These modules can be mounted at high level or on top of racks to provide additional cooling. The use of refrigerant eliminates the circulation of water inside a data centre, avoiding the risk of damage caused by overflows and floods due to failure. When installed at high level above a cold aisle, the configuration of these cooling modules enables air to be drawn from two hot aisles, cooled and delivered into the cold aisle below. Modules installed on top of a rack draw air from the hot aisle behind and deliver cooled air to the cold aisle in front. For larger cooling loads up to 25 kW per rack, the XDFN is an all-in-one cabinet incorporating servers, cooling, UPS, fire-extinguishing and monitoring systems. A cabinet accommodates blade servers to one side and the peripheral equipment on the other. The principle of operation is that air circulates only inside the enclosure. Hot air is extracted from the back of the cabinet, flows through the cooling modules and is passed back into the front of the cabinet.
