CHP adds to sustainability at London’s SCORE project

This DACHs mini-combined-heat-and-power unit at the SCORE project in Leyton, London, is expected to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by about 20% combined with centralised electricity generation and heat-only boiler plant.
Visitors to a sustainable community project in Leyton, London, can see the benefits of a DACHS mini-combined-heat-and power unit supplied by Baxi Technologies and an array of photo-voltaic panels on a display panel in the reception. Signals representing the amount of electricity from both sources will be fed to the panel, which will show the amount of carbon dioxide being saved. The DACHS unit at SCORE, a £9.9 million community, sports and healthcare project is fuelled by natural gas and provides 5.5 kW of 3-phase electricity and 12.5 kW of heat. It has been supplied with an exhaust condenser to increase its heat output by about 6% and improve thermal efficiency. As a result, it is expected that the overall fuel efficiency will increase from 79% to around 82%. Based on predicted running hours at SCORE, the DACHS unit is expected to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by about 3 t a year, a saving of about 20% compared to electricity generated by centralised power plants and heat-only boiler plant. The mini-CHP unit is the lead appliance for space heating and producing domestic hot water. The DACHS unit and its associated equipment were installed by Aqua Mechanical Services, the main M&E contractor for the project.
