Evaporative-cooling systems eject heat from ejector-seat factory

Breezair evaporative coolers in several departments of Martin Baker at Watford are reducing internal summer temperatures of around 40°C to a comfortable 23°C.

Summer temperatures of up to 43°C in the catering unit of Martin Baker, which makes ejector seats have been reduced to around 23°C following the installation of Breezair evaporative cooling. In other parts of the factory, summer temperatures of around 40°C have been reduced to the same level.

The installation of these Breezair coolers follows the success of 15 units installed two years ago.

The company’s main production area at Denham is a single-storey building of 5700 m2, where 220 people work on assembly, sheet metal, welding and injection moulding.

Aluminium components for ejector seats are anodised to protect them against extremes of temperature. Heat from vats of hot water and chemicals caused temperatures to rise to nearly 40°C. Using an existing scrubber system to remove the hot air, Aircon Services installed a Breezair cooler to inject cool air into the area to reduce temperatures to a pleasant working level.

The non-destructive-test department in an area with a low roof was experiencing temperatures of about 30°C from heat created by equipment used to pressure test pipes. Using a Breezair cooling working with an extraction system in the roof of the building has reduced the temperature by about 9 K.

A cooler in the catering unit has reduced summer temperatures of 35 to 43°C to around 23°C.

The Breezair approach provides sufficient cool air to drive all the hot air out of a building. Fresh air from outside is passed over a medium saturated with water, cooled and washed before entering the building.
