Construction orders show strong long-term growth

The sustained growth enjoyed by the private commercial sector of the construction industry dipped in the three months to August compared with the previous three months, according to figures from the Department of Trade & Industry. Orders were down slightly by 4%. Year-on-year orders, however, were up by 40% and were 56% higher than the corresponding three months a year earlier. There was similar picture in orders for public housing and housing associations. Orders for the period were 3% down on the previous three months, 36% up year on year and 40% up on the same period a year earlier. This a relatively small market sector, so comparisons are affected by large variations. The private-industrial sector shows signs of a more pronounced downturn, with orders down by 15% on the previous three months. Year-on-year orders were up by 19%, but down by 1% on the corresponding three months a year earlier.
