With the support of an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust, evaporative cooling has been installed in this printing works to reduce peak summer temperatures of 35°C.
With the help of an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust a printer in Feltham has installed evaporative cooling to reduce temperatures in the print area from over 35°C to around 24°C. The loan for the installation of four units from EcoCooling at Geoff Neale Litho was £18 500, covering about 90% of total installation costs. They deliver 20 air changes an hour of air that is cooled to around 23°C. EcoCooling explains that evaporative cooling is an alternative to refrigeration-based air conditioning and is used as part of a balanced ventilation system to cool buildings. An EcoCooler rated at 30 kW can reduce electricity costs by over £2000 a year and save 10 t of carbon a year compared to an equivalent refrigeration-based system. Installation cost is 75% less and running costs are 85% less. A single EcoCooler unit can deliver up to 35 kW of cooling while using just 1.5 kW of electricity Such savings are sufficient for most installations for small to medium enterprises to qualify for an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust. Qualifying projects must have energy saving of at least £1000 a year and a project cost of £5000 to £100 000. These loans can cover the complete installation cost of replacement, upgrade or new installations. The simple application process can be processed within three weeks.
