The smoke-ventilation system for this residential complex of 16-storey blocks in Manchester has been provided by SW Controls.
SE Controls was chosen to provide a smoke-ventilation system for the Leftbank residential complex in Manchester. Part of the Spinningfields urban redevelopment programme, it comprises a series of 16-storey high-specification blocks. The brief for SE Controls was to design and install a smoke-ventilation system that will automatically open windows in the event of fire and efficiently disperse smoke from the building. The system comprises a series of corridor smoke vents and windows AOV (automatic opening vent) windows powered by the multi-zone OSO control systems. Proven SELA chain actuators operate the AOVs. By preventing the build-up of toxic fumes in stairwells, the system helps create a layer of clean air, increasing the escape time. If smoke moves to adjacent floors, detectors will open the appropriate vents. Battery backup supports the OSO control system for up to 42 h in the event of a power shortage. Firemen have an over-ride to open and close windows.
