Colman delivers the air to new dairy near Leeds

The vast new dairy of Arla Foods at Stourton near Leeds can fill over 345 bottles of milk per minute with its 10 lines served by 16 milk silos, each with a capacity of 250 000 litres. The ventilation requirements of this 28 000 m2 facility are met by Colman equipment, using a mix of diffusers, grilles and displacement units. Ken Taylor & Associates were the consulting engineers throughout the design and construction phases and specified the air-distribution equipment. Colman worked closely with the consulting engineers and sub-contractor NG Bailey. The brief required the design of an efficient method of producing and maintaining indoor air quality that addressed environmental criteria without compromising performance and functionality. In addition, aesthetic appearance and hygiene were major criteria in areas handling raw milk. The contract was worth over £50 000 and required a large number of stainless-steel grilles and diffusers for general areas throughout the facility. The order included 25 grade 316 stainless-steel double-deflection grilles and 10 specially designed Repus stainless steel displacement units to supply high volumes of conditioned air into high-hygiene areas. The Repus units were raised from the floor for easy cleaning. Eight surface-mounted 4-way louvre-faced diffusers were included in the specification, also with 23 grade 316 stainless-steel egg-crate grilles and numerous unlined plenum boxes and unlined stainless-steel plenum boxes. Multiple spigots are used on double-deflection/egg-crate grilles due to the extremely high air volumes. All volume-control dampers and plenum boxes are galvanised, except where stainless steel was required. Stainless-steel grilles distribute air throughout the homogenising and product rooms and other raw-milk areas to meet hygiene requirements. Standard grilles are installed in office areas. A displacement-ventilation system was specified for the vast filling and bottling halls. In the dairy halls, Repus VRC quarter-round corner panels and RAC half-round/bow-shaped panels and a KDC 3-way-spread floor-mounted panel delivers up to 5000 l/s to meet the requirements for higher airflows. All Repus units are of stainless steel with reinforced fronts and provide a constant airflow without the risk of draughts.
