Energy supplier chooses energy-efficient chilled ceilings for cooling

Helping to overcome limited floor-to-slab height in this new call centre of EDF Energy in Ipswich is comfort cooling provided by SAS chilled-ceiling panels.
Chilled-ceiling panels from SAS International provide comfort cooling in the refurbished customer-services centre of EDF Energy in Ipswich. The project included the conversion of a 2-storey outbuilding into a call centre, and the ceilings were specified as the cooling solution throughout both floors. SAS chilled ceilings use water as the heat-transfer medium, rather than refrigerant, and the cooling effect is mainly by radiation. Their operating temperature of 14 to 17°C reduces energy consumption and they enable separate cooling zones to be set up so that only occupied areas are cooled. Chilled ceiling also lend themselves to technologies such as free cooling and ground sourcing. Lorne Stewart, the project’s M&E contractor, specified SAS chilled ceilings for their energy efficiency and the building’s low floor-to-ceiling height, which prevented the use of other cooling methods that require deep ceiling voids. These chilled ceilings require a void of only 85 mm. Simon Ayres, project manager for Lorne Stewart, explains, ‘Having investigated the various other systems on the market for cooling the space concerned, we decided upon a chilled-ceiling installation, complemented by displacement ventilation which provides a fresh-air supply to the space. ‘The chilled-ceiling system is relatively simple to connect and has a great degree of flexibility when trying to co-ordinate it into constrained building structure. The overall finish of the product is of a very high standard and is also very aesthetically pleasing. This, coupled with the good acoustic properties of the tiles, made the chilled-ceiling system ideal for the application.’ Hinged drop-down panels provide easy access to the ceiling void, and the lack of moving parts results in minimal maintenance requirements.
