Refurbishing with Panasonic VRF systems cuts energy use by London office building

Replacing 22-year-old plant in a London office building with Panasonic VRF heat-recovery air-conditioning system is reducing energy use by 20%.
VRF air-conditioning systems from Panasonic’s Urban Multi range installed as part of the rolling refurbishment of the Kensington Centre office building near Olympia in London are reducing energy consumption by 20% compared with the previous systems. Individual VRF systems are being installed on each floor, facilitating more efficient cost management. This 6-storey building on Hammersmith Road was opened in 1985 as the headquarters of Lyons Group but has been a multi-tenanted building since 1991. The original heating and cooling systems are only now being replaced. Dave Evans, director of Microfix Infrastructure Services, which is installing the VRF solution, explains, ‘Apart from its age, the old system could not cope adequately with peak summer temperatures — and it was never designed to handle the additional heat load resulting from the dramatic growth of computers over the past 20 years.’ Most of the building’s heating and cooling requirements are being met by VRF heat-recovery units in the basement car park and on the roof. They produce 56 kW of cooling and 63 kW of heating and are linked to ducted indoor units on each of the six floor s as they are refurbished for tenants. A ducted inverter unit from Panasonic’s FS Flexi System range has been installed to cool the reception area. The new systems are controlled by tenants, and the landlord can accurately measure energy use.
