Vaillant air conditioning cools primary school in Manchester

Excessively high temperatures in summer in this primary school are no longer a problem since the installation of Vaillant air-conditioning units to cool classrooms and the IT suite.

Following a comment in an Ofsted report that the fabric of the school building was contributing to classrooms feeling hot and stuffy, Manor Green Primary School in Tameside, Greater Manchester, has installed 10 Vaillant climaVAIR high-efficiency wall-mounted heat-pump systems with a total cooling duty of 52 kW. The rest of the Ofsted report was excellent.

The school had previously tried to manage the problem using freestanding air-conditioning units.

Fiona Thorley, the school’s business manager, put forward a proposal to the school’s governors that a more permanent solution was needed. It was agreed by the finance committed that the school should invest in correctly sized and designed air-conditioning. Local contractor Autem was brought in to specify and install the system, and recommended Vaillant units linked to a building-management system.

Head teacher Jackie Lomas, comments, ‘The new air conditioning has made such a difference to the school. There is now an acceptable temperature climate in every classroom, and the upstairs classrooms no longer feel like greenhouses.

‘The IT suite has 30 PCs and was the hottest room in the school. Now it is a pleasant environment in which to work. We’ve also noticed that the children become restless less often, which means they are able to concentrate for longer.’
