Dutch football club moves to top of energy-saving table

The best-performing football club in The Netherlands — for energy — achieves this success with the help of a Priva building-control system.
A building-control system from Priva Building Intelligence is contributing to a Dutch football club achieving 40% lower carbon-dioxide emissions than other similar installations and using 45% less energy. Abe Lenstra stadium is home to SC Heerenveen, which plays in the Dutch Premier Division. The stadium seats 26 000 people and also has a multi-functional sports hall, swimming pool and squash courts. Rink Hendriksma, technical manager for Sportstad Heerenveen, says, ‘Care of the environment is a priority here, and it has driven the management team to create the most economical energy-saving system in the northern Netherlands. Compared to conventional installations, we consume 45% less energy and cause 40% fewer CO2 emissions.’ The energy strategy is based on heat pumps using underground heat and precise control of the buildings services by the Priva system. The stadium requires 5 MW of heating and 5 MW of cooling, with the option of a further 2 MW. Electrical consumption averages 8 GWh, and gas consumption is 1200 m3 a year. About 100 m3 of water is used during a match. The site continues to evolve. The most recent growth has been office space on the north and west side of the complex with an area of 30 000 m3, but which could expand to 60 000 m3. Rink Hendriksma explains, ‘At the front end of the control system are Priva TC Vision and TC Webvision that provide a valuable insight to building-services plant and equipment operation and energy consumption figures. The software is extremely user friendly, and I also like the fact that you can download updates from the Internet and do not have to install anything locally yourself. They are freely programmable systems, and the web version of Priva Top Control is ideal. If required, my colleague and I can monitor the installations from home. I have a UMTS card in my laptop, so I can even check things out during the holidays if I wish.’ Sportstad Heerenveen supplies heating, cooling, power and water to all tenants. About 150 measuring points have been installed around the complex. Meters are read monthly, and the data is saved in the history database of the Priva Top Control system. The data is linked to energy-monitoring software which, based on rates entered, calculates energy costs for electricity (peak and off-peak), gas, water, cooling (peak and off-peak) and heat.
