Bristol geothermal heating system is one of the largest in the UK

120 boreholes at the Lakeshore development in South Bristol will meet 80% of the energy requirements of the 400 apartments.
One of the country’s largest geothermal heating installation, the Urban Splash development in Hartcliffe, South Bristol, includes 120 boreholes to a depth of 102 m providing heating, cooling and hot water to 400 apartments. At a depth of 100 m, the ground temperature ranges from 11 to 13°C. Pipes running through the boreholes absorb energy, which is then upgraded by heat pumps. This borehole installation has been designed by Loopmaster to optimise heat extraction from the ground, which is a mix of limestone and mudstone. More boreholes are underneath the buildings, with the rest in landscaped areas of the 10 acre grounds. The boreholes were drilled by specialist contractor Thermadrill. The geothermal installation will provide 80% of the energy needed in the apartments, including heating in winter and cooling in summer. Designed by Atelier 10, Lakeshore is on the site of the former Imperial Tobacco Headquarters and re-uses the existing building to save embodied energy. Demolition materials are being recycled, and there is a comprehensive waste-management strategy. A sedum roof will be used on a new building alongside the original structure. Low-energy lighting will be used throughout, as well as systems that contribute to water saving and low-energy A-rated electrical appliances. The new atrium roof on the original building is made from inflatable transparent pillows, like the Eden Project, to maximise daylight into apartments and help control temperature in the atrium. Sustainable drainage systems are used, and properties include systems to encourage the effective recycling of household waste.
