Ambi-Rad delivers comfort for new Eurostar service depot at Temple Mills

The huge expanse of the new Eurostar maintenance depot near Stratford in east London is heated by a Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant-tube system and specially designed air curtains.
The turnkey heating solution for the new depot for Eurostar trains near Stratford in East London comprises Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant-tube heaters and specially commissioned high-velocity overdoor air curtains from Ambi-Rad. The Temple Mills Eurostar Engineering Centre is the state-of-the-art depot serving trains operating on the High Speed 1 line from St Pancras International to the Channel Tunnel. Two buildings at the depot are heated by Nor-Ray-Vac radiant heating — the stores and the bogie-drop area. In the main maintenance shed, Nor-Ray-Vac burners were installed close to the entrance/exit doors. Up to eight train 400 m-long trains can be accommodated in the 24 840 m2 shed at any one time — all under cover. Internal temperatures are protected by specially built Airbloc air curtains. Project consultant Rail Link Engineering specified a high air duty that was not available on any off-the-shelf products. Airbloc was the only manufacturer of air curtains to take on the challenge of producing air curtains to this unusual specification. To maintain comfort temperatures around open doorways, Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant tubes were also fitted above. In the 3100 m2 bogie-drop area, where part of the train is worked on while 90% of it remains outside the building, an 18-burner continuous radiant-tube system was installed over the main working area, suspended at either 7 or 11 m. This low-intensity warmth can be zoned to ensure that only those parts of the building being used are heated. Phillip Bond, senior infrastructure engineer with Eurostar, comments, ‘Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant heating provides good heat coverage, with no build-up of condensation, which is essential for the safety of our workers.’
