Lindab Safe put through its paces in Birmingham office development

The need for the fast installation of 700 m of spiral ductwork on 14 floors of Colmore Plaza in Birmingham was met using the Lindab Safe presealed system.
Lindab Safe ductwork has helped a leading ductwork specialist meet a demanding schedule for a major development in Birmingham. The Colmore Plaza is a 19-storey new-build office development on the site of the former Birmingham Post & Mail Tower. It called for both rectangular and spiral ductwork in huge quantities and on fast delivery. Boyd & Co. originally won the ductwork contract for the shell and core in September 2006. M&E contractor Derry Building Services then appointed the company for the final fit-out. Simon Roxburgh, managing director of Boyds, says, ‘It’s a big project and a major feather in our cap, but meeting the fast-track schedule meant pulling out all the stops. We had just 27 weeks to complete the first fix. While the lower floors of the building have poured-concrete beams and could be served by rectangular ductwork made in our own factory, the top 14 storeys feature Cellform beams with circular piercings, and that meant spiral ductwork — lots of it. ‘We needed something like 700 linear metres of spiral ductwork for every floor, and the entire ductwork system had to be pressure tested as part of our contract.’ The challenge was met using the Lindab Safe system, based on presealed ductwork components. Recent tests carried out by BSRIA showed that the system can halve installation time and cost 20% less than the traditional approach. Air leakage is also low. At a static pressure of 500 pa, air leakage from Lindab Safe is 43.8% that from a system constructed from traditional components.
