Siemens wins integration contract for new terminal at Heathrow

The contract for the delivery of information and control systems for the planned new Eastern Terminal at Heathrow Airport has been awarded to Siemens Building Technologies.
Siemens Building Technologies is to design the entire information and communications system for the planned new Eastern Terminal at Heathrow Airport as a £3.6 million contract with BAA. This terminal will replace Terminal 2 and the Queen’s Building. It will be used by the Star Alliance, the global group of more than 20 airlines. As master systems integrator, Siemens is responsible for the delivery, from concept design to operational readiness, of the information and controls systems portfolio, which will integrate the various systems for building management, security, fire communication, flight information and airport operations. The new terminal will handle around 20 million passengers a year and take about four years to finish. Architect is Norman Foster, with Hoare Lea as M&E consultant. Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke will act jointly as complex building integrators. The project is led by Siemens Building Technologies Security Systems in the UK, with support from the Siemens global centre for command and control security projects in Athens. This group has extensive experience of integrated communications with large-scale projects such as the Athens Olympics, the Asian Games and Bangalore and Bangkok airports. Contract negotiation included BAA representatives visiting some of these projects. Peter Hawksworth, managing director of Siemens Building Technologies, Security Systems, says, ‘BAA wasn’t looking just for a contractor but a partner who can handle the technologies and resources for a project of this scale.’
