National Blood Centre completed in Filton E

Engineering services for the £60 million National Blood Centre at Filton in Bristol, which has been completed on time and to budget, were designed and project managed by Faber Maunsell. It is the world’s largest blood-processing centre. Built by Laing O’Rourke, the £60 million centre for the NHS Blood & Transplant Service will deal with 600 000 units of blood a year, offering a service to 14 million people and providing blood to 90 hospitals. Alan Fox of Faber Maunsell says, ‘This is the culmination of nearly five years design, involving many people from Faber Maunsell, the design and construction team and the National Blood Service ‘Sustainability was high on the agenda as part of the design, and assessments were undertaken to ensure effective reduction of carbon emissions in construction and the subsequent operation of the building.’ Two connected buildings provide space for office accommodation, laboratories, clean rooms and a large manufacturing area.
