LED emergency lighting brings energy and safety benefits

Illuminex
Illuminex LED-based emergency lighting used in the refurbishment of this secure mental-health unit has brought a number of safety benefits.
Illuminex’s Xscape intelligent emergency-lighting products have been installed as part of the refurbishment of the secure unit at St Bernard’s Hospital of the West London NHS Mental health Trust. The behaviour of some patients can lead to self harm or damage to other people or property, so safety and security were considerations in deciding on equipment to be used. Because they use LED light sources, only 4 V DC is present at the downlighter. LED light sources also save energy and, important in this secure unit, can be controlled from a remote electronics and battery pack. Labour costs are also reduced considerably, and the materials used to make these fittings do not present any disposal problems at the end of their life. This emergency-lighting system can be integrated into the unit’s Trend building-automation systems to give full monitoring of the status of each luminaire from a remote location.
