Report recommends integrated teams to deliver sustainable built environment

Traditional procurement practices used by the construction industry act as a barrier to the delivery of sustainable buildings, according to a report launched recently in the House of Lords at a meeting chaired by Lord O’Neill of Clackmannan.

The report (‘Sustainable buildings need integrated teams’) is published by the Specialist Engineering Alliance and promotes a vision for the achievement of sustainability across the built environment.

It also insists that the large number of interfaces between parties in the construction process coupled with high transaction costs and risk of duplication and re-work mitigate significantly against the proliferation of sustainable buildings.

On the basis of a careful review of best-practice advice, industry case studies and previous reports from organisations such as the National Audit Office and the Office of Government Commerce, SEA recommends appointing, at the start of a project, an integrated delivery team with in-depth knowledge of the construction process. It also highlights how an integrated team can improve value to the client by designing in sustainable solutions and designing out waste and inefficiency.
