SES wins university project

A £13 million M&E contract for new buildings at the University of York has been awarded to Shepherd Engineering Services.

SES has been appointed the main M&E contractor for the £13 million M&E contract to extend the University of York’s Heslington East campus. Building-services work is due to start in late summer 2009.

This is the first phase of the university’s plan to extend this campus. The four new academic buildings have a total design-and-build cost of over £66 million.

The university and its appointed teams are working towards a ‘Very good’ BREEAM rating, for which a 10% improvement in CO2 emissions over Part L of the Building Regulations is required. However, initial modelling of one building indicates that a 14% reduction is achievable.

Most of the 10% of renewable energy planned will be from a centralised biomass boiler plant.

Other key objectives are minimising solar glare and reducing heat loss. Many open spaces will be naturally ventilated or use a mixed-mode philosophy.
