Elesta BMS helps safeguard irreplaceable documents

An Elesta composite building-management system serves the new Huntingdon Library & Archives.

An Elesta composite building-management system is playing a key role in preserving Huntingdonshire’s written historical resources — including medieval charters, modern maps, printed books, parish registers and Victorian photographs. These irreplaceable original documents are stored in a purpose-built strong room, where temperature and humidity are constantly monitored and controlled by the BMS.

There are two motor-control centres. One controls the boiler and DHW plant. The other controls the air-handling unit that serves the archive/office area. Humidity is controlled using an ultra-sonic humidifier, with cooling coils providing dehumidification.

The ground-floor library is naturally ventilated using a multi-zone Passivent iC6000 BACnet control system with opening windows for incoming air and high-level louvres around an atrium at second-floor level providing the exit-air path. Ventilation stacks are used for the single-storey area of the building.

Zone temperature/CO2 and manual over-ride units provide the necessary space conditions to the iC6000 controller. Sensors for wind speed, direction and rain over-ride the window iWAC controllers in the event of adverse conditions.

The sensors and controls for the natural ventilation also control the manifold valves of the underfloor heating and provide mixed-mode control for the air-conditioning units.

All plant is controlled in sequence to achieve maximum energy savings.

The system was installed by Elesta system partner Clarkson Controls.
