Pimlico Plumbers joins in London 2012 preparations

When a plumber from south London downs tools for the day he sets off to the gym to train three young boxing hopefuls for the London Olympics in 2012. Samm Mullins works for Pimlico Plumbers and is a former boxer. He retired from competition 10 years ago due to injury and has since become qualified to coach at advanced level.

He is coaching light heavyweight Obed Mbwakongo aged 20, Ruth Rapier (19) from Blackheath and American boxer Genevieve (29) from New Cross.

Training takes place at south London boxing club Lynn AC. It is Britain’s oldest continuing amateur boxing club, founded in 1892. Danny Williams, who knocked out Mike Tyson in four round, is one of the best known boxers to emerge from the club.

Samm Mullins says, ‘Pimlico Plumbers has been a sponsor of Lynn AC for many years, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with them and all the inspiring young boxers who are coming through. Obed stands a great chance, and we’ve committed to an intense training programme to ensure he’s at the top of his fitness for the Games.
