Getting carbon reduction down to a fine Art

Atkins is to use its own remote-technology energy-management system Atkins remote Technology (ArT) to reduce the carbon footprint of its own estate. It has the potential to reduce energy bills by an average of 34% and can also monitor escalator usage, footfall traffic and many pieces of equipment to ensure a building is running smoothly.

A recent pilot at the Thorpe Park office in Leeds reduced gas consumption by 43% compared with the previous year by putting a summer shut-down regime in place.

ArT is a web-based system that allows the collection of energy data, whilst remotely monitoring and controlling energy usage and environmental conditions on a particular site. It is being installed in 12 Atkins offices throughout the UK and will significantly contribute to the company’s commitment to achieve a 12.5% carbon reduction by 2012.

John Kidd, business excellence director with Atkins’ asset-management business, said, ‘We have already seen our customers benefit from this technology, so we are delighted to be using ArT within Atkins’ own offices.’.
