Looking towards zero carbon, water and waste — the new education campus of Manchester Metropolitan University, for which AECOM is lead consultant.

AECOM has been appointed lead engineer for the new £120 million education campus of Manchester Metropolitan University. The appointment includes all civil, structural, M&E design as well as sustainability and acoustic design consultancy. The project is designed by the Manchester office of architect Sheppard Robson.

The Hulme Community Campus at Birley Fields will accommodate the 6000 staff and students from the MMU Institute of Education and the Faculty of Health, Psychology & Social Care. The new 42 000 m2 campus will include teaching and research spaces, student information point, student accommodation, car parking, shared community facilities and a major public square fronting Stretford Road.

Avinash Mandalia, AECOM’s project manager, says, ‘MMU is committed to creating the most sustainable university campus in the UK. Key to this is the university’s aspiration to take substantial steps towards the three zeros — zero carbon, zero water and zero waste.’

AECOM’s approach includes an innovative proposal to create a shared network of connected heating sources linking MMUs existing campuses and the wider community. The share network will also link electricity, potable and non-potable water, IT, security and intelligent building information.
