Modern boilers deliver new heating for historic building

MHS Boilers, plate heat exchanger

Energy-efficient boilers have been integrated with the existing heating system in Bishop’s Lynn house in King’s Lynn using a plate-heat-exchanger kit supplied by MHS boilers, as were the boilers. The two 120 kW condensing boilers have been installed in the vaulted cellar of the Grade 2 listed building that dates from the 17th century.

Bishop’s Lynn House is on the corner of Tuesday Market Place, one of the largest medieval town squares in northern Europe and presented major challenges for the installer. In particular, access to the plant room was restricted, making the compact Ultramax PB boilers a perfect choice.

The plate heat exchanger can be incorporated into the boiler to protect it from the effects of accumulated dirt in older systems. The premix burner can overcome difficult flue arrangements. For this installation, new flue liners were fed down existing chimneys, and the space between the liner and the chimney used to bring fresh air for combustion direct to the boilers. The redundant third chimney now provides high-level ventilation for the plant room.

These boilers have on-board weather compensation.
