Morfitts has completed the £550 000 design-and-build M&E contract for a new archive building at the University of Leeds. It will be shared with Marks & Spencer, which was started in Leeds over 125 years ago, and will permanently house M&S’s full company archive and provide future expansion space for collections from the university library.

A design requirement was that in the event of a major loss of energy supply, environmental conditions in the archive rooms must be maintained for 48 h — with very little tolerance being allowed.

The project was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The M&E services include a gas-fire CHP system, a 120 kW propane chiller, solar PV panels and other energy-saving devices.
