Interserve to build Passivhaus primary school in Leeds
Interserve has been awarded a contract with Leeds City Council to build a new school to meet Passivhaus standards. Richmond Hill Primary School will use up to 80% less energy than a conventional equivalent facility, reducing carbon emissions by 60% — without the use of renewable energy. It will have 630 pupils and a 26-place nursery.
Superior air tightness and superb insulation, coupled with a highly efficient mechanical-ventilation system with heat recovery, will all contribute to the building achieving its Passivhaus certification.
Jim Shaw, Interserve’s project manager, comments, ‘Building to the rigorously tested high standard of Passivhaus is a challenge, and is testimony to the partnership approach of Interserve — both with Leeds City Council and with our subcontractors. It is gratifying that Interserve is at the cutting edge of raising standards in school building for the UK.’
The school is due to open in September 2012.
