Sustainable-power business Ener-G has boosted its production capacity for CHP and biogas generators by 50% with the opening of another factory in Salford. Only last year the company doubled its original manufacturing space by opening a second factory in Sunderland and has now trebled its original manufacturing space to 3200 m2 by converting an adjacent building.

FETA expands its interests in fire protection

Many new schools only achieve low-level EPCs

Over half of new schools requiring an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) are achieving band D or below (53%), according to schools minister Jim Knight responding to a parliamentary question from shadow climate-change minister Gregory Baker. By the end of 2008, 28 secondary schools and 64 primary schools had EPCs, and only three had achieved an A rating, with a further 29 reaching a B rating. Secondary schools generally achieved better EPCs than primary schools, with 61% achieving bands A to C. compared with 25% for primary schools. 16 of the 28 secondary schools achieved band A or B (57%) but only 16 of 64 primary schools (25%)

Civil engineering bucks the trend in new project starts

Despite a marked growth in civil-engineering projects since the beginning of 2009, the Glenigan Index for March shows a 23% year-on-year fall in the number of new construction projects starts. Glenigan forecasts that the construction industry will contract by 30% year-on-year in the first half of 2009. Although the outlook is expected to improve in the latter half of the year, construction activity is thought likely to remain subdued until 2011.

The £3000 donated this year brings the total to just under £15 000. The money will be used to help with the costs of running three hospices for children suffering from life-threatening or limiting illnesses. Office staff with the group raised the money with a number of charity events, including a giant raffle at its Christmas party.
