Air-source heat pumps deliver renewable heating for new primary school in Sheffield

Mitsubishi Electric, heat pump, space heating
This Mitsubishi heat-pump installation for a new school meets the planning requirements for renewable energy.

To meet planning regulations requiring at least 10% of energy needs to be met using renewable energy, a new school in Sheffield has its heating and hot water provided by six Ecodan CAHV commercial air-source heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric. The new buildings for Woolley Wood Primary School cater for 75 children with severe and complex learning difficulties and disabilities. Special features include a hydrotherapy pool and interactive sensory rooms.

Underfloor heating eliminates the need for wall-mounted radiators.

Graham Temple, marketing manager for the heating division, explains, ‘According to the developer’s own SBEM calculations, this solution delivers a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions, which far exceeds the minimum target required by the council.’

The heat pumps are installed on the roof, a task which was simplified by packaging them onto specially constructed skids, with an electricity supply, and delivering them on a just-in-time basis. The only work then needed was connecting to water and electricity supplies ready for commissioning. Installation time was reduced by 75% to a couple of days rather than the usual two weeks.

The system offers space heating and sanitary hot water at up to 70°C with from 43 to 688 kW of renewable heat. Units will operate in ambient temperatures from -20 to 40°C.

The system was installed by Turn Key AC Ltd, with equipment supplied by reseller Pacair.

The installation is being monitored by Mitsubishi Electric, with the results available on the Ecodan dashboard (see first link below).
