Oil to LPG conversion achieves fast payback

Converting from oil to LPG is achieving an 18-month payback for a holiday park in Lancashire.

Changing from oil to bulk LPG from Calor for heating its swimming pool and gym area is expected to achieve an 18-month payback on investment for South Lakefield Leisure Village near Carnforth in Lancashire. The site is owned by Pure Leisure Group, which has a long-standing relationship with Calor for supplying bottled gas for heating lodges on its nine parks throughout the UK.

Tony Fox, managing director of Pure Leisure Group, explains, ‘We previously used oil boilers for the heating of our swimming pool and gym area. These were 10 years old and were in need of replacement. We looked at using alternative fuels such as biomass, but felt this would be difficult because of the amount of storage that would be required to house the materials.

‘We also looked at replacing our existing system with new oil boilers, but instead opted for two above-ground LPG tanks from Calor Gas, along with two 90 kW Blades heating services due to the projected energy savings.’

The Blades units on this project extract heat from the flue gases to serve underfloor heating, which is therefore effectively provided free.

The installation comprises two 2000 l tanks above the ground. The tanks have Calor’s Think Tank telemetry system, which monitors gas levels and automatically initiates ordering when required.

The installation took three days to complete.
