Four biomass Energy Cabins from Euroheat replace oil for district heating at Hartpury College in Gloucester.

Hartpury College in Gloucester is looking forward to reducing its energy bill of £800 000 a year following the replacement of oil-fired heating plant with a biomass district-heating system. The project will qualify for payments from the Renewable Heat Incentive of nearly £80 000 a year. Euroheat supplied the system for this residential agricultural and sports college, which has over 1300 students.

Euroheat supplied four prefabricated Energy Cabins, with a 199 kW HDG Compact wood-pellet boiler, integrated 14 t pellet store and 4000 l accumulators.

The estimated consumption of 300 t of wood pellets a year will replace over 150 000 l of oil and reduce carbon emissions by about 400 t. The oil-fired system has been retained as back-up.

The site already had solar PV panels.

Consultant for the project was Steve Luker Associates. He says, ‘The part of the campus benefiting from biomass previously cost some £143 000 a year to heat. Taking into account previous fuel costs, we hope that savings will amount to over £100 000 a year when lower-cost fuel is combined with the RHI.
