Interserve starts work for Durham University

Interserve

Interserve has started site work on an £11.5 million research centre for the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics at Durham University. The building has been designed by Daniel Libeskind, the architect behind the redevelopment of New York’s World Trade Center.

Due for completion in late 2016, this 3-storey building will provide over 2400 m2 of floor space. There will be 80 new offices for professors, lecturers, doctoral and post-doctoral students, support staff and visiting academics.

The Ogden Centre houses research aimed at understanding the fundamental properties of the Universe.

Among Interserve’s tasks are to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and an A Energy Performance Certificate. Part of the complexity of achieving these results lies in accommodating the unusual geometry of the building envelope, which will make air-tightness and required insulation levels challenging to accomplish.

Sustainability measures include solar panels, rainwater recycling, ground-source heat pumps and LED lighting.
