Weatherite supplies AHUs for hospital isolation rooms

Weatherite has designed and manufactured two specialist air-handling units to provide controlled conditions in isolation rooms in a Glasgow hospital. Both units at Raigmore Hospital provide 100% run and standby capability and can be swapped over in operation during maintenance and service work to ensure continuity of room conditions.

Richard Irvin Energy Solutions awarded the contract, and Weatherite worked with consultants Pick Everard of Glasgow to provide the optimal solution.

The design incorporated a number of elements essential to ensure isolation of contaminated air. They include negative air pressure, bespoke high-efficiency filtrations systems and high-grade H10 HEPA filters.

There is a bag-in, bag-out arrangement for removing contaminated particulate filters and gas absorbers. This system protects maintenance staff from coming into direct contact with the interior of the housing and hazardous contaminants when filters are changed.

Each air-handling unit is housed in a purpose-built enclosure that was lifted onto the roof of the building. Tests were undertaken (pictured) to simulate wind pressures and snow loads on the sides and roofs of the plantroom as required by Scottish Building Regulations.
