Maintenance and re-lamping costs were important considerations as the lighting is above production machinery and scaffolding is required for access, so such work could disrupt production.
Stephen Hancock of Irn-Bru explains, ‘Although we originally considered high-frequency fluorescent light sources, we quickly realised that the 100 000 h life of the Endurance fittings would give us even greater savings on maintenance costs. Endurance also offers better colour rendering and less depreciation of light output compared to the fluorescent option.’
The 88 Endurance fittings supplied will provide at least 10 years’ service before relamping is required, saving £5000 a year on maintenance.
Annual electricity consumption has been reduced by over 236 000 kWh, amounting to nearly £9500 a year at 4 p/kWh and giving a payback on the installation within two years.
The Endurance fittings are fully enclosed so their is no risk of glass contamination.
The facility operates 24 h a day from Monday to Friday, with engineers and sanitisers working at weekends. The lighting is zoned in banks of six fittings, enabling different light levels to be selected at different times of day. These fittings provide instant striking, so there is no delay to reach full output.
