As the building services industry faces a shortage of skills, Generation Z, born between 1995 and 2010, are the people the sector needs to attract if it is to grow and modernise.

The threat of Brexit and the growing number of projects are putting a strain on staffing numbers within the industry. A number of organisations have produced stark figures on the scale of the problem. CIBSE estimates that construction needs 150,000 new recruits by 2021 in order to meet current demands.

Building services and the wider construction industry also face the challenge of adopting new methods of working – including greater use of digital tools. And this is where Generation Z can bring value to businesses looking to the future. This group of young people have been dubbed ‘digital natives’.

Companies need to be aware of how best to target, train and retain these young people, a topic discussed at EMEX 2018.
