Adaptable lighting helps Tesco add floor area to existing stores

A customisable lighting system using standard products developed by Riegens for Tesco is a key part of a mezzanine concept to increase sales area in existing stores.
To enable additional sales area to be added to its existing stores, supermarket giant Tesco has designed a mezzanine concept using a customised Riegens Lighting package. The system creates an innovative continuous lighting concept for the underside of the mezzanine. The concept is based on the standard recessed 300 mm-wide trough used in all Tesco ceiling installations, but with added infill sections. It has been installed in Tesco stores in York, Swansea and Cumbernauld. The main 1200 mm trough housing incorporates high-frequency control gear to operate two 54 W colour 4000 K T5 tubes, a 7-core through-wiring loom and a white aluminium louvre. The wiring loom enables Tesco to have three circuits for switching lighting for trading and stocking lighting requirements and for the 3-hour maintained emergency lighting. Infill panels are plain or pierced to accept a PA speaker or factory fitted with a 35 W gimble fitting from the Aspiro range of architectural display recessed or suspended spotlights. The design of the continuous system has the flexibility to allow one infill panel to be replaced with another,or additional spotlights to be added. The lighting scheme provides 1200 lx in the store extension, which will house new clothing and entertainment departments and a cafeteria, also lit with Riegens luminaires. The scheme delivers cost-effective lighting combining a customised product with stock fixtures.
