The HRD30 air-handling unit was installed by George Birchall Ltd with minimal downtime. It typically removes 300 litres of water in a 24 h cycle and plays a vital role in maintaining temperatures and conditions for the indoor environment. It typically offers 300% heat recovery to pool water and/or air in the pool hall, compared to 50 to 60% from recuperator-type air-handling units.
John Thomas, independent consultant for the project, explains, ‘The Calorex unit was an obvious choice as we were looking for a system that would not only overcome the ongoing problems caused by condensation but also operate with greater efficiency than the existing 30-year-old system, which was coming to the end of its life cycle.’
The installation was part of a scheduled shutdown for repairs.
HRD units can reduce energy consumption by up to 60% and associated carbon-dioxide emissions by up to 55% compared to a full-fresh-air ventilation system similar to that replaced.
