Climate control for the protection of exhibits and comfort of visitors is provided by three Carrier Global chillers.
The Berlin branch of ABB Gebäudetechnik GmbH was responsible for the building-services engineering.
The three chillers each have a cooling capacity of 6.6 kW. The cooling system is designed for constant standby operation. Cold water at 6°C supplies air-conditioning units in the Pei building. Underfloor heating in the roofed courtyard is connected to the system and can be operated in heating or cooling mode.
The 30HX Global chillers have two separate cooling circuits to ensure operational safety. Their Power3 screw compressors are designed for R134a and have 30% higher performance than standard screw compressors. Each chiller has six steps of operation, so there are 18 steps in all — enabling considerable cost savings to be achieved at part load, or 80% of operating time for comfort air conditioning.
A Carrier systems manager regulates and monitors the interaction of the three chillers and is integrated into the BMS of the Pei building. The services as a whole are managed by a facilities-management company.
