Manchester air-conditioning project is one of first to use advanced control concept

One of the first air-conditioning projects in Europe to use Mitsubishi Electric’s G50 controller forms part of the refurbishment of the offices of United Co-operatives offices in Wythenshawe Civic Centre, Manchester. The premises contain the headquarters of United’s food and funerals groups. 200 staff on two floors now enjoy the benefits of City Multi and Mr Slim environmental control systems. The advanced control and trouble-shooting potential of the G50 system also benefits maintenance contractors and the facilities-management team. Its capabilities are accessed through the web browser Microsoft Internet Explorer. The air-conditioning equipment was installed by Airway Solutions, which also co-ordinated the removal of the existing central plant. The design and installation logistics were complex, as the building had to remain fully operational throughout the installation period. DTS Consulting, which acted as system design consultant and project manager, had to ensure that there was no shutdown during normal working hours, with the existing plant remaining operational while the new equipment was installed via carefully planned changeover periods. The choice of the G50 was an important consideration for Gary Baxter, director of DTS Consulting. He says, ‘We required a controller that was cost effective, user friendly for non-technical staff, but still comprehensive in its capabilities. We also required a controller that could be password protected with various levels of authorisation and accessed at any time from a remote source for energy monitoring and maintenance purposes. After detailed discussions, the G50 proved the ideal solution.’ Some 150 VRF and Mr Slim units now serve a large open-plan area, various cell offices, a canteen and boardroom. Heat-recovery ventilation to meet fresh-air requirements is also provided. air.conditioning@meuk.mee.com
