Water-cooled server cabinets deliver 45 kW of cooling

This recent installation of Knurr’s CoolTherm water-cooled server cabinets for a major British financial institution can deliver up to 45 kW of cooling per cabinet.
The capabilities of Knurr’s CoolTherm water-cooling for server cabinets to enable more cabinets to be installed in data centres and reduce operating costs are being exploited in a range of data centres across the UK. CoolTherm was introduced four years ago and can deliver 45 kW of cooling to a 19 in server cabinet with no impact on the temperature in the room. David McGee, general manager with Knurr UK, tells us, ‘Having introduced the first commercially available water-cooled cabinets in 2003, we now have in excess of 1500 CoolTherm systems operating worldwide. ‘We have supplied large numbers of pilot schemes in the last two to three years for customers to fully assess the benefits of CoolTherm water-cooled technology. The very positive results of these tests are now seeing full-scale commercial operation throughout a large number of substantial UK sites.’ CoolTherm’s cooling capacity of 45 kW per cabinet is said to be eight times more than typical high-density cabinets for computer rooms. They use chilled water at around 12°C, with the water off at around 22°C. Connections to water pipes below the raised floor are made by flexible plastic pipes. A thermal management system is built into each cabinet.
